About Us

Refugee Trauma Initiative was born in 2016 inside a tent in Idomeni, where some 13,000 refugees had become stranded at border of Greece and North Macedonia.

Inside that tent the first RTI programme began and we began providing group sessions for men, women and children who had experienced violence, displacement and torture.

Our vision is to offer non-clinical mental health support, tailored to the needs of displaced people and host communities, to foster community healing and to implant supportive measures that will stay with communities for as long as they are needed. By targeting well-being and belonging among the communities with whom we work, we help newly-arrived refugees settle, heal, and begin integrating in their new host countries.

Our Vision

Sustainability

We share this earth with 70 million displaced people, struggling to live dignified lives amid ever more complex crises. In order to respond effectively, we must be just as sustainable in the face of protracted crises. This why we employ locally and invest in local partnerships.

Inclusiveness

Our dream is to see refugee families happily integrate into their host communities. Integration is a two-way process and it takes positive steps from both newcomers and hosts. By building bridges and facilitating connections between children from both communities, we help foster acceptance, inclusion, and kinship.

Humanity

We founded RTI as a volunteer collective, responding to an overwhelming need for culturally sensitive psychological care to refugees in dire conditions in Calais and Idomeni. Today, we are registered in the UK and in Greece, employ a dozen full time staff, and run three programs in multiple locations in northern Greece.
